This time I’m answering a question from a reader:
“I’ve launched my course in June of 2022, made a few sales on social media. It’s very time consuming. Should I focus on SEO next?”
Short answer: NO
A few things to unpack here.
- Your course is not yet validated. I look for at least 20-30 sales with one funnel before we can move on to optimizing/scaling.
- There’s a 95% chance that you don’t know where this sale came from. I’ve only ever seen a handful of creators track things properly. This means you can’t even tell me which of the social media posts worked.
- SEO takes 6-12 months to show results. I’ve had creators with ranking pages that did not convert… because they were the wrong keywords. Companies they hired looked for low hanging fruit without any buyer intent. These can be easy to rank, show traffic and make nice reports with but are worthless.
- When it is time to focus on SEO I’d at least budget $1-2k to create articles and run paid traffic to the keywords that you want to rank for. This way you will learn (A) which ones convert (B) real traffic potential & (C) value of each keyword. It will allow you to narrow it down to a couple of winners and then use a tool like ahrefs to estimate how many backlinks you will have to pay for to compete. All this should be done before and not after you begin an SEO campaign.
Get one funnel converting first. If you have a large audience, use that. If you don’t, build one or use paid ads. SEO is great but you’re not there yet.
The second you see that a few search terms are bringing in a lot of conversions… create articles around them and start the ranking process.
